Bedbug sighting surprises New York state workers

The only thing worse than knowing you have a bedbug problem is learning you have one but weren't told about it.

A number of state Department of Taxation and Finance workers on Thursday said they were unaware that the bugs had been detected in a section of Building 8 on the Harriman State Office Campus.

Other than “flight delay” or “LaGuardia Airport,” there might not be a two words that make travelers more uncomfortable than “bed bugs.” So prepare to be creeped out, because reports of bed bugs in New York City’s hotels have increased more than 44% since this time last year — even at some of the city’s most expensive, five-star properties.

Bedbugs have been reported in some of the city’s swankiest hotels with a list that includes the Waldorf Astoria the Millennium Hilton and the New York Marriott Marquis.

Rock City bumped Philadelphia from the top spot on the Terminix list for the first time in four years - but the city of City of Brotherly Love is still scratching in second place.

New Yorkers can sleep easy, since far fewer bedbugs are reportedly biting in the Big Apple. The city plummeted from No. 3 to No. 15 on the scratch-inducing chart.
